Population dynamics, economic outcomes and development in Nigeria

The relationships between population and development are a critical one. Population trajectories impact national and continental development in definitive ways meaning that issues of population must be taken seriously especially in Nigeria where development has been largely elusive while population issues remain poorly addressed. Nigeria has the largest population in Africa and tenth largest in the world. According to the last census in 2006, the population of Nigeria is about150 million with a growth rate of 3.3 percent per annum meaning the population will double in 22 years and that Nigeria may have 300 million people in 2028. This paper engages critical issues relative to population, economic outcomes and development ligaments in Nigeria within policy framework. Subjects of interest are discussed in longitudinal manner. Indicative, but not exhaustive, issues scientifically engaged are; population, economy, socio-cultural forces and infrastructure, over the years, and for the future of Nigeria and Africa.
