The effect of contraceptive use on adolescent sexual behaviour in University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria

The main focus of this study was to examine the effect of contraceptive use on adolescent sexual behaviour in University of Ibadan, Oyo-State, Nigeria. A sample size of two hundred and fifty respondents was systematically selected from the entire population of University of Ibadan students, but two hundred and nine adolescents were adjudged for the study due to loss of questionnaires. The data was analysed using frequency distribution, cross tabulation and regression analysis. The result indicated that contraceptive use promotes safe sex: as it prevents adolescents from negative consequences of sexuality such as unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Secondly, that contraceptive use increases adolescent sexual promiscuous behaviour. However, the study recommends that the adolescents should abstain from sexual intercourse. Finally, any adolescent who cannot abstain from sexual intercourse should use contraceptive and also seek medical, parental or religious counselling.
